The US News Best High School rankings reviews thousands of high schools across the county to determine if they are eligible for a gold, silver, or bronze medal. Eligibility is determined by performance on statewide tests, graduation rates, college preparation, and AP test scores. For the past three years, Maryland has been the leading performer with the highest percentage of schools earning a gold or silver medal.

27.5 percent of Maryland schools earned medals in the 2017 Best High Schools rankings. This can be further broken down into 56 total medals: 12 schools earning a gold medal (5.9% of the schools in Maryland) and 44 schools earning a silver medal (21.6% of the schools in Maryland). Although bronze medals did not count for the state-by-state analysis, Maryland earned 8 bronze medals.

Carroll County Schools

Carroll County High Schools are some of the best schools in the state. Carroll boasts a college readiness index of 37.4, which is one of the highest in the state and the second highest in the greater Baltimore area. Carroll also has the highest rate of proficiency in mathematics and has the fourth highest rate for of proficiency in English.

The SAT is one of two tests that are required to attend college. They are meant to be representative of college preparedness and whether or not an individual will succeed in their first year of college. Average SAT scores in Carroll County high schools were among the top in the greater Baltimore area. 5 of the Carroll County high schools were in the top 50 schools with the highest SAT scores.

Although Carroll is excelling in academics, it’s also near the top in state for well-balanced and nutritious lunch options. We are tied for second best with Frederick County when it comes to food scores here in the state. The school system has put an emphasis on providing healthy options like fruit and vegetables at each meal. This focus has helped to bring Carroll County among the top of the list.
