September Song Musical Theatre presents Mary Poppins

On stage at South Carroll High School in late July and early August, Mary Poppins is September Song’s big annual production that features talented performers from all over Carroll County and the surrounding areas. Judging by their past shows, including The Music Man last year and Annie the previous year, this show is sure to be a big hit. Luckily, there are several opportunities to attend a performance (see the show details below).

The show stars Eric Stein as Bert, Katie Sheldon as Mary Poppins, Jim Gross as George Banks, Christy Stromberg as Winifred Banks, Compton Little as Jane Banks, and Julianna Groves as Michael Banks. Visit the September Song website to view the full cast list.

More About the Play

You may be wondering whether this play is just like the Disney film that shares its name. It will be very familiar if you’ve seen the film, however there are some differences. The production, which originally opened on the West End in 2004 and then on Broadway in 2006, borrows from both the series of children’s books by P. L. Travers  and the Disney movie which premiered in 1964 and combines elements of the two. It’s the familiar story of the jack-of-all-trades Bert, the Banks family, George and Winifred Banks, their two misbehaving children Jane and Michael, whose latest nanny storms off in frustration, and of course, Mary Poppins.

You’ll find that some elements of the movie do not appear, while other elements that were only in the books make an appearance in the stage play. The magic running throughout is not missing, and it should be fun to see how September Song chooses to create that element of magic that makes Mary Poppins so fun.
